I’ve photographed two very different departments for Boston University, Health Services and the Center for Computing & Data Sciences. What struck me was that they weren’t different at all. Both spaces held the same thing: people doing real work. No performance. Just focus.

Health Services showed me what care actually looks like when people are genuinely invested in supporting students. The conversations happening in offices. The attention to someone’s actual needs. The quiet competence of people who show up every day to help. Then I photographed the Center for Computing & Data Sciences, where students and faculty were working through ideas, solving problems, building something that matters. Different work. Same commitment.

One of the best things about photographing across an entire university is witnessing what an institution actually values by watching where people show up with real investment. Not the lecture hall performance. The office conversation where someone just explained a concept that changed how someone else thinks. The student realizing they belong here. The staff member understanding they’re actually making a difference. These are the moments that reveal what Boston University actually builds, not what it claims to build.

The gap between “here is a university” and “here is where people genuinely care” is filled with invisible moments throughout every department. The mentorship. The rigor. The decision to create spaces where excellence isn’t performed but lived. We were there to capture that.
