This is not an ordinary day at the park. I’ve photographed plenty of those. This was different the moment I arrived.

Hundreds of people gathered not out of obligation but out of need. Families. Kids running around the grass. Neighbors standing shoulder to shoulder with people they’d never met but recognized immediately. The Embrace statue, two bronze hands reaching toward each other, stood in the center of it all. Not a sculpture. A reason.

People came to honor Harry Hom Dow. To stand in front of those hands and remember. To bring their kids and say his name. To be part of a community that decided someone mattered enough to mark it permanently.

One of the best things about photographing moments like this is capturing what actually happens when people show up for each other. Not the official remarks. The quiet conversation between two people who both loved him. The child asking their parent who this statue is for. The woman who stood in front of those bronze hands for longer than anyone else and just breathed. These moments reveal what a person meant, not what a plaque says they meant.

We were there to witness it. To hold it.
