This project is one of the most fun photo sessions I’ve done. There’s something about a carousel that gives everyone permission to just be a kid for a moment, and nobody questions it.

The whole space became specifically joyful. Kids dragging parents toward their favorite horses. Adults standing in line like they were the ones who wanted the ride. The carousel slowing everything down in a city that doesn’t usually slow down for anything.

One of the best things about photographing moments like this is witnessing what happens when people stop rushing and just show up. The parent’s expression watching their child pick their horse. The conversation between two kids who just met in line and became friends before the ride even started. The way someone’s whole body relaxes when they realize they’re allowed to just be here, just enjoy this, just pick the horse they want. These moments reveal what community actually is. Not a program or an initiative. Just people being together in a space that welcomes them.

The gap between “here is an attraction” and “here is where we belong” is filled with simple moments. The decision to create a space where anyone can pick a horse and nobody asks why. We were there to catch it.
